About EAP
Founded in 2021 by Dr. Kurt E. Engelmann, President of the National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI), Educational Achievement Publishing (EAP) is based in Eugene, Oregon. Our mission is to provide educators with high-quality, research-based instructional materials that deliver proven results for students who meet program entry criteria.
EAP was born from the success of the Direct Instruction Spoken English (DISE) program, which demonstrated strong outcomes for English Language Learners in schools across the country. Recognizing the need for a dedicated publisher to make DISE widely accessible, Dr. Engelmann established EAP to meet that demand.
DISE is our premier offering, designed with the same precision and effectiveness that define all Direct Instruction (DI) programs. Future programs from EAP will continue this tradition, maintaining the highest standards through rigorous development and field testing.
At EAP, we’re committed to helping teachers and school leaders empower every student to thrive.
Our Mission
At Educational Achievement Publishing (EAP), we aim to empower educators with rigorously developed, research-based instructional programs that drive measurable student success. We are committed to advancing academic achievement by delivering materials rooted in the proven principles of Direct Instruction—ensuring every student who meets program criteria receives the opportunity to thrive through effective, structured learning. Through ongoing refinement and field validation, we provide schools with the tools to elevate instruction and close achievement gaps with confidence and consistency.
About Direct Instruction (DI)
Direct Instruction (DI) is more than just a teaching method—it’s a research-validated instructional approach, a theory of learning, and a powerful model for schoolwide reform. Backed by over 50 years of studies across diverse student populations and academic subjects, DI consistently delivers measurable, lasting results.
A database of over 200 research articles demonstrates DI’s effectiveness. As noted in the comprehensive bibliography on the National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI) website:
“The efficacy studies provide extensive evidence that the programs are effective and support the assertion that all children can learn if provided with appropriate instruction.” Direct Instruction was one of only two school reform models identified as having strong evidence of effectiveness in An Educators’ Guide to Schoolwide Reform (Herman et al., 1999).
What sets DI apart from other instructional models is its precision:
- Carefully sequenced, incremental lessons
- Explicit instruction and active student engagement
- Continual review and correction
- Rigorous field-testing of all materials
- Data-driven placement and daily mastery teaching
Most DI programs were developed under the leadership of Dr. Siegfried “Zig” Engelmann and published by McGraw-Hill Education. All meet the standards outlined in the Rubric for Identifying Authentic Direct Instruction Programs.
Student success with DI depends on three key factors:
- Placement in programs that align with their current skills
- Mastery of each lesson component daily
- Consistent, dedicated instructional time
To implement DI effectively, teachers must be trained in the method, and school leaders should be equipped to support success through structured implementation, coaching, and problem-solving.
